A Reminder to Myself (the artist)

A reminder to myself (the artist),

It’s official. A year has gone by since my last in person audition, and class. During that time I felt like my career was finally gaining some momentum, and then the business was shut down.

But that was okay, artists around the world were offering their services via zoom and other remote platforms. I could still continue my training

And I did, for 6 weeks. And then I didn’t. Originally I was ashamed that I haven’t taken a zoom dance class, coaching or voice lesson for 6 months. I wondered, “ am I even still an artist?”

Though some days it’s harder to find this answer than others, yes. Yes, I am still an artist.

For me, taking remote classes makes me sad. It makes me long to be in a room full of other creatives and feel that collaborative spark. It makes me judge myself and instead of being in the moment, grateful to be making art.

To those who are continuing to make art and take classes remotely, I commend you! But to those who have taken a little break, I commend you too. It doesn’t make you less of an artist

I needed that reminder recently, and I hope if you need it to, you believe me. You are still an artist.

Act 2 will be here soon enough. Be patient with yourself as we all navigate that second act.
