Meet Danika St.Denis

Canadian born, NYC based multi-hyphenate artist.

Are there any differences in Audition in Canada vs the US?

I have been in the New York and US audition space for a while so my view of the experience is pretty American centered, however from my experience auditioning and booking in both countries I’d say they have been pretty similar in terms of protocol and execution!

What are 3 of your career goals?

1.     Release my album Late Bloomer (working title) in 2025 with MARS Mgmt!

2.     Tour!

3.     Direct a play on Broadway.

What are 3 things you love about the theatre industry?

1.     Storytelling. We are all storytellers and everyone contributes in their unique way to the story. And the variety of stories we get to tell- some that need to be heard, some that brighten, some that challenge, some that inspire, and the list goes on and on.

2.     Friends/connections nationally and internationally. I’ve been fortunate to work with incredibly talented performers all over the US, having performed with them all over, and now have lasting connections.

3.     The community. Like-minded individuals who are unapologetically passionate.

Hey! Gimmie a little intro!

My name is Danika St.Denis and I am originally from Canada but I have been living in NYC for the past 8 years. I am based here in the city, but I have booked shows all throughout the US and have been fortunate enough to travel all around the states to perform. NYC is definitely home base though and I love the shows and opportunities I have had here.

Tell me about your performance background

Back home in Canada my favorite show I ever did was when I played Anne in Anne of Green Gables because that’s just a Canadian staple and she’s such a fun character. As for the US, for musical theatre I would say when I played Sofia in Dear Soldier Boy, which was a new musical that I did in Ohio. She was fun and mischievous and sassy and people that know me that saw the show said it was just like watching me as Danika on stage except Sofia was quirkier. And her costumes were outrageous and hilarious so I loved them. For straight plays I enjoyed playing Veronica in God of Carnage at the Vino Theater in Brooklyn and when I played Rachel in Together-Alone at The American Theater of Actors in Manhattan. This was an original production written by the owner of the theater himself, James Jennings, so it was really cool to be able to bring his show to life. I did the original production and the remount. And lastly, I have performed in Cool Yule Christmas with RWS entertainment three times in three different states and I’d define it as a pop/rock Christmas review style and I absolutely loved it. I mean, how can I complain about getting to sing Santa Tell Me by Ariana Grande five times a night? It was a blast.

Are there any differences in show in Canada vs the US?

From my experience performing in both countries, I’d say they’re pretty similar in terms of rehearsal and performance schedules. Of course it differs with the theater and the company you’re working with, but the places I’ve worked in both countries have been professional and comparable to each-other in terms foundation and structure. I’d say the main difference would be the material. Some of the shows I studied and performed in Canada came from specific Canadian playwrights.
