Meet Sarah Joy Kane

It's no wonder Sarah is a part of the comedy world. She is the epitome of joy in her energy and character, so why not throw in a laugh or two! Her sketches about being an actor in New York City really make me laugh… she's speaking for many of us as she so hilariously  sheds some insight on what we all go through (both on the graceful, and not so graceful days..). I hope your answers bring a smile to your face, as they did mine :)

A lot of your sketches are about being an actor and living in New York City, it's so relatable to your viewers. Where did you come up with the idea behind that?

I think a lot of the ideas come from experiences I’ve had in the city with super early mornings standing in line outside, mascara tears in the bathroom at Pearl, awkward auditions I bombed or fun chat sessions with friends in holding rooms! I remember thinking, what a crazy, chaotic, magical world we as actors live in and that if I was having these experiences and thoughts other actors must be too! I think the hustle and craziness of the industry can sometimes leave us feeling depleted, tired and rejected so, I wanted to create something that would make people laugh, breathe and maybe find joy in the midst of those tough days!

How did you realize comedy was something you were interested in?

From a young age my siblings and friends would ask me to “do the funny voices” and “silly expressions” and I loved making them laugh.. and the attention wasn’t bad either haha! My dad is a pastor, and I remember him asking my sister and I to sing this silly song for our congregation when I was about 9. My sister ended up having stage fright and running of stage while I continued to milk the song and do an encore (now I cringe thinking about this!) I was hooked! :)

What advice would you give to someone who was trying to get started in the comedy world?

I think comedy is about connecting with other people in such a joyful way. It’s about finding a commonality that really makes them feel understood and uplifted! Comedy is such a gift in that it allows us to be kids again and play and create! I think the advice I would give is to do just that, create and play! In this time especially, there are so many platforms for creators to make art and get it out to the world! Not everything I first try works or is good right away (and some just plain flop) but as you begin to create, it starts you on this amazing journey of ideas and play that can be so fulfilling! Start a YouTube channel, make funny tiktoks or just record some ideas you have with friends over zoom! (And then let me know what you’ve done, cuz I’d love to check them out! ) I’ve realized that casting folks are aware of what we as actors are creating and sharing and on multiple occasions I’ve been so excited to book things based on a random tiktok or YouTube video of mine they came across!

Fun Facts:

What is your favorite thing you've done in quarantine?

Great question! Before my husband and I moved to NYC, we were on tour performing together for 5 years! Since settling down here he got a super adult job as a restaurant manager working 60 hours a week so we sadly didn’t see eachother very much! Quarantine has been such a blessing for us! We’ve spent every day together for the last 4 months painting our apartment, singing loudly to karaoke tracks (sorry neighbors!) and being fur parents to our sweet new pup!

What is your favorite book?

I really love “The Actors Life: A Survival Guide” by Jenna Fischer! It’s so relatable, informational and helpful while also being uplifting and comedic!

Who is your inspiration ?

My mom inspires me. She’s been a music teacher most her life and also plays the piano for the church I grew up in. She’s a ray of sunlight and makes every Person she Meets feel Special and heard. She had a stroke a few years ago and was determined to play piano again! She worked so hard both physically and mentally and at 70 years old was rocking those piano keys at church again with such joy!

What is your dream role?

I just had the amazing pleasure of playing Glinda for a virtual reading of Wicked and was in tears by the end! It’s such a great comedic role and yet the character is so much more complex than you first think she is! I’d love to play her on stage someday! Telsey? Are you reading this? ;)
