This week Morgan got the opportunity to chat with actress, musician and dancer, Gabrielle Hines! She wanted to give her the platform to share her experience as a black woman in our industry. To which Gabrielle responded, " I'm sure I won't be able to capture my whole experience, but I'd like to what I can."

That really struck a chord with Morgan. We must remember, we are only getting a glimpse of what our fellow performers of color have experienced. We must continue to educate ourselves on our own accord, and not leave it up to them. On top of educating ourselves, as allies, we must continue to speak up, and demand change.

Enjoy Gabrielle's optimistic outlook on where she hopes the industry will go from here!

“It’s actually really surprising how I’ve trained myself to accept the microagressions, lack of diverse roles, and exclusivity that comes with a career in theatre. Subconsciously, I prepare to be one of few black actors at an audition. I can’t even explain the joy that comes over me when I see another actor that looks like me at a call. But this feeling is rare. Instead of questioning why this is the “normal”, I abided by the system that’s been in place for years. A system that sees me more as a token than a talent. A system that is quick to put me in the ensemble as a pop of color. A system that expects me to belt and perform vocal runs rather than sing legit or opera. This is such a pivotal moment because many of my white peers had no idea what actors of color endure in order to perform. And why would they? Black actors and actors of color have suffered in silence and had to take part in a system that doesn’t value us just to get the opportunity to perform.

HOWEVER, I am optimistic that this moment, in which white peers are becoming white allies and black actors are no longer subscribing to this “system", will be the catalyst for legitimate change! Myself and other actors of color are speaking up and out to the issues that make doing what we love difficult and I feel as though we are finally being heard. I pray that I’m right and that this momentum continues and brings real tangible change.”

Fun Facts about Gabrielle!

Where are you from?

I’m from Chester County, PA! About 45 minutes outside of Philly (without traffic).

Where have you been quarantined?

I’ve been quarantined at home with my family.

What have you spend most of your time doing while in quarantine?

I’ve spent a lot of my time reconnecting with friends and family which has been amazing! It’s kind of funny how social distancing has really encouraged so many people to reach out and connect with those we love. I’ve also used this time to get my ducks in a row in regards to my career. I’ve added some new songs to my repertoire, updated and added to my website, and taught myself how to edit video for reels and self tapes.

Are you binge watching any shows??

Somehow I’m always bingeing Parks and Rec! I can’t get enough of that show. I’m also a huge fan of The Challenge!

What’s the best thing you can cook?

I’m famous in my family for my buffalo chicken dip ! Which is ironic because I’m newly vegetarian 😂

Who’s your role model?

My mom. I know it’s a cliche answer but I admire her parenting, how she juggles her faith, career and marriage. My parents are celebrating 30 years of marriage this year and that is such a testament to hard work, perseverance, and love. I’m blessed to have been able to watch my mom be an amazing wife and mother my whole life. My mom is such a go getter and so so supportive of both me and my brother. Those are all qualities I aspire to have.

If you could have one super power what would it be?

If I could have one super power, it would be endless energy. I would still want to be able to sleep, but if I could go through the day without that 2pm slump I would be unstoppable!
